Create Projects with Writer-Bot
Part One of the Guide to using Writer-Bot in FWN
Writer-Bot lets you create projects and engage in writing challenges with other FWN members. In this How-To, I’ll do my best to explain one of the key commands so that you can use Writer Bot for creating and logging your own projects.
Creating a project
Creating a project is one of the first things you should do when you’re ready to start using the FWN server alongside your own writing practice, as it is the easiest way to join the sprints (timed challenges) and track your progress on any project of your creation/choosing.
To create a project, send a message into the #Sprint-Maker-Project-Shaker channel using the following format:
!project create nickname Actual Name of Project
As an example, here is what I sent into the #demo-for-substack channel to start the project behind this Newsletter Draft:
!project create demo Newsletter Drafts
When referring to this project in the future, I will only have to use ‘demo’, rather than the full name I have given to the project
You can use any word processor for writing. The only thing Writer-Bot will ask you is for the word count (wc) after you’ve joined a sprint challenge.
What is a Project?
Anything can be a project. I’ve chosen to start a new project for this Newsletter, but another project I’m working on is my dissertation. Projects are most useful for longer works - like short stories or novels - where you might want to see your word count growing. For the poets, I’m testing out Author-Maton to see if there’s a function more suited for us.
Closing statement
If at any time you need more assistance with Writer-Bot, you can simply message !help in any channel and Writer-Bot will reply with the commands menu. (A few other Bots might chip in as well because they share the same prefix (!) but feel free to ignore these if you so desire). Additionally, the command menu for every Bot is supplied in the #-Bot-Cheat-Sheet channel, as well as the Bot manuals I am sharing here on Substack.
I hope this guide has helped with creating projects! In the next How-To I will demonstrate how to use Writer-Bot to start, join, and contribute to Sprints using the projects you have created. (and also describe what Sprints are. Don’t worry, you won’t be needing any asthma inhalers)
